Unbalancing act

“There is no such thing as work-life balance. Everything worth fighting for unbalances your life.” – British author Alain de Botton

I stole that quote from Jane Friedman’s wonderful newsletter for writers. I’ve seen Friedman speak at conferences, and met her when she stayed at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow here in Eureka Springs.

For the past couple of years, I have served on the nonprofit’s board of directors. The institution is pure Eureka: born in chaos, thriving against all odds, and punching above its weight class.

The colony offers writing residencies in a secluded setting. The many authors who return year after year from all corners of the nation will tell you that something about the place inspires their best work. Of course, they’re probably talking about chef Jana’s cooking.

Over the course of 25 years, the colony has become a national treasure. It’s open to aspiring authors and established veterans alike. It’s the only writer’s colony we know of that has a suite with a kitchen designed for culinary authors.

Let me tell you, it was a good time to stay at the colony when Kat Robinson was testing pie recipes.

As of this week, I have stepped off the board to serve as the colony’s interim director. Keeping the place running smoothly is a daunting task, and I’m lucky to have the help of an extraordinary staff. In truth, I’m just trying not to get in their way.

While this does mean less time for my book, I’m still committed to releasing it next spring. Juggling both will be a challenge, but both are worth fighting for.
